World Series Game 2, Cardinals vs. Red Sox score update: Boston errors give St. Louis 4-2 lead

Matt Carpenter delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly and the Red Sox made costly errors on the ensuing play to hand the lead back to the Cardinals.

Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow gave up a base-loaded sacrifice fly to Matt Carpenter and threw the ball away on the next play for a pivotal error to give the Cardinals the lead in Game 2. St. Louis added another run on a Carlos Beltran RBI single to jump ahead of the Red Sox, 4-2, in the seventh inning on Thursday night.

Red Sox starter John Lackey started the seventh inning with a strikeout of Allen Craig, but after a walk to David Freese and a Jon Jay single he was replaced by the left-handed Breslow. With Daniel Descalso batting, pinch-runner Pete Kozma and Jay executed a double steal to give the Cardinals a chance to tie the game.

Descalso then walked and second baseman Matt Carpenter was able to get the ball into the outfield on the first pitch. Kozma came in to score on the sacrifice as catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia failed to corral a wide throw from left fielder Jonny Gomes. Breslow fielded the throw as it passed Saltalamacchia and attempted to catch Jay at third, but his throw was well off the mark.

After that debacle, Breslow remained in the game to face Beltran. Beltran lined a single into right to score Descalso to advance the Cardinals lead to 4-2.
