The San Diego Padres activated left-handed pitcher Cory Luebke from the 60-day DL, and the 28-year-old "feels good" despite not having thrown a pitch since September, reports Corey Brock of MLB.com. Luebke, who underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2012, was shut down on Sept. 15 due to continued soreness in his elbow. The Padres also activated right-hander Joe Wieland from the 60-day DL and designated left-handers Tommy Layne and Colt Hynes for assignment.

Luebke went under the knife in 2012 after making just five major league starts and missed the entire 2013 season while he recovered. His rehab has included some ups and downs, and he was forced to put things on hold in September when the pain returned to his pitching arm. Brock’s report suggests that that pain is now gone, although Luebke is yet to throw off a mound since that time. He has appeared in 55 major league games in his career (25 of which were starts), during which time he has posted a 3.25 ERA in 188⅓ innings while striking out 195 batters.

Wieland also had Tommy John surgery in July 2012, and the 23-year-old missed the entire 2013 season. Although neither pitcher is fully recovered, both needed to be re-instated soon; all players on the 60-day DL must be activated no later than five days after the end of the World Series regardless of health status, and rosters must be cut down to 40 players. With the moves they made today, the Padres' roster now stands at 41 players, according to Gaslamp Ball.
