World Series 2013: Adam Wainwright won’t start Game 4

The St. Louis Cardinals had been tossing around the idea of starting Adam Wainwright on short rest in Game 4 of the World Series, but those plans have been nixed and he will start Game 5 on normal rest, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The right-hander has never started a major league game on three days' rest, and, now that the series is guaranteed to go at least five games, the Cardinals won't tempt fate by rushing their ace back to the mound.

Wainwright struggled in his Game 1 start against the Boston Red Sox, lasting only five innings and giving up five runs (three earned) in a losing effort. However, he threw only 95 pitches before being pulled by manager Mike Matheny, so there was talk that he might start on short rest if the Cardinals found themselves on the verge of being swept in Game 4.

With Wainwright ruled out, Lance Lynn will take the ball in Game 4, reports Goold. Lynn made two appearances in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He came out the bullpen in extra innings to record the win in Game 1, and won his start in Game 4 despite failing to make it out of the sixth inning.
