Edward Mujica was injured when he lost Cardinals’ closer job

A groin injury played a role in the ineffectiveness that cost Mujica his ninth inning duties.

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Edward Mujica was suffering through a groin injury when he was removed as the team's closer in late-September, reports Chad Thornburg of MLB.com.

The Cardinals took Mujica out of the ninth inning after he blew two of his final four save chances and helped blow a lead against the Brewers on Sept. 20. Over 10 games in September, he posted an 11.05 ERA. Contributing to his ineffectiveness was the pain in his groin that began around the middle of the month.

“My groin was bothering me, but I was trying to keep going, trying to help the team win. But you know, it [didn’t] happen,” Mujica told reporters.

The soreness, focused on his right side, effected his plant leg when he pitched and messed with his delivery. Trevor Rosenthal took over as closing games and has shone thus far.

Mujica has seen very limited time in the playoffs, tossing one inning in both the Divisional Series and the Championship Series. He has yet to pitch in the World Series.
