World Series Game 3, Red Sox vs. Cardinals score update: St. Louis leads, 2-0, after 3 innings

The Cardinals did some work against Jake Peavy in the first, and their starting pitcher is dealing.

The St. Louis Cardinals jumped on Boston Red Sox starter Jake Peavy for a pair of runs in the first inning and hold a 2-0 lead after three frames in Game 3 of the World Series on Saturday.

The Cardinals singled four times off of Peavy in the opening inning, plating runs on hits by Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina. The 32-year-old right-hander has now allowed 23 earned runs in 21⅓ playoff innings.

He settled down after that, retiring the side in the second and third. Peavy got some help in the latter inning from Holliday, who was too aggressive rounding first after Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury misplayed the Cardinals' slugger's pop-up.

Cardinals starter Joe Kelly has kept the Red Sox hitless through three innings while striking out three batters. He's received some assistance defensively, first on his own barehanded grab on a comebacker in the first inning, then on Matt Carpenter's diving snare in the second.
