Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran failed to cut off a ball hit into the gap by Red Sox rookie Xander Bogaerts, allowing the rookie to reach third base to lead off the fifth inning.
Xander Bogaerts triples past Carlos Beltran, scores 1st run for Red Sox
The Red Sox are on the board in Game 3 after Xander Bogaerts, who led off the inning with a triple past the ailing Carlos Beltran, scored on a force out.
Beltran slightly overran the bounce, but also appeared to be limited on how far he could bend down to get his glove on the ball. The 36-year-old star suffered a rib injury while crashing into the outfield wall in Game 1.
The hit was ruled a triple, although it probably should have been scored as a double and an error on Beltran. Bogaerts scored three batters later on an RBI force out off the bat of Mike Carp to get the Red Sox on the board.
The Cardinals hold a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
