The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals both had chances to score runs in the fourth inning, but neither team capitalized on their opportunities. The Cardinals lead 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth.

The Red Sox and Cardinals both put runners in scoring position but failed to plate any runners during the fourth inning.
The Red Sox had their first scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth inning, but failed to plate any runners. Jacoby Ellsbury led off the inning with a single, giving Boston their first baserunner of the game. Kelly recorded two consecutive outs, including a Shane Victorino flyout to center field.
Victorino's ball was well-struck, but Jon Jay ran it down. The outfielder, however, didn't inspire confidence with his route to the ball:

David Ortiz then drew a two-out walk, giving the Red Sox their first runner in scoring position. Kelly recovered, striking out Daniel Nava to strand two and end the inning.
Yadier Molina led off the top of fourth with a single, then Jake Peavy issued a walk to David Freese. Jay followed with a single up the middle, but third base coach Jose Oquendo chose to hold the not-quite fleet of foot Molina at third, loading the bases with nobody out.
Peavy stayed in the game to face Pete Kozma, and rewarded John Farrell's decision, striking out the Cardinals shortstop on a 2-2 fastball. Joe Kelly and Matt Carpenter both followed with infield popouts, recording the last two outs of the inning and stranding three base runners.
