Chase Headley rumors: Padres believe they’ll keep 3B during offseason, per report

Headley will be a free agent following 2014, but the Padres would be selling low at this point.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Following end-of-the-year organizational meetings, the San Diego Padres are intent on keeping third baseman Chase Headley as he enters his final year under team control, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Prior to the 2013 season, the Padres had talked about extending Headley as he had just recently come off a breakout year that saw him hit 31 home runs while posting an 875 OPS. He fell back to his typical career numbers in 2013, hitting .250/.347/.400 with 13 home runs.

The Padres see themselves as being closer to win-now mode. While they would certainly listen to offers for Headley, they will not actively pursue a deal. Furthermore, any players they would get in a trade would have to be ready to help the big league club immediately.

Headley is entering his final year of arbitration. He made $8.5 million this year and can be expected to approach $10 million in 2014.
