Athletics interested in re-signing Bartolo Colon

Colon, a former Cy Young winner, had what could be argued to be the best season of his career in 2013 with Oakland.

Bartolo Colon's agent says the Oakland Athletics have shown a willingness to re-sign the pitcher, reports Joe Stiglich of CSN California.

“They’ve expressed interest,” said agent Adam Katz. “Bartolo loved his time there and would be interested in (talking to the Athletics).”

Earlier in October, Oakland general manager Billy Beane said the team would be “foolish” to not want Colon back. The big right-hander has spent the last two years with the Athletics. He made 30 starts for the team in 2013, posting a 2.65 ERA and 1.16 WHIP while helping the team make the postseason.

The 40-year-old Colon made $3 million this season and $2 million in 2012. A new contract would likely be a one-year deal, but he could see a raise after his spectacular 2013 season.

The Athletics have enough young pitching to make re-signing Colon a luxury. A.J. Griffin, Jarrod Parker, Dan Straily and Tommy Milone all made over 25 starts for Oakland while the oft-injured Brett Anderson should be back to full strength and top prospect Sonny Gray is certain to be in the rotation at the outset of 2014.
