Dodgers’ Dee Gordon playing outfield in winter league

Gordon has been seen as a better fit in the outfield by many in baseball as he has struggled defensively at shortstop.

USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers will have shortstop Dee Gordon attempt to play center field in the Dominican Winter League, reports the Los Angeles Times.

A former top prospect, Dee has not hit particularly well in the majors and is without a position since the team traded for Hanley Ramirez to play shortstop. With Ramirez in the Dodgers' long-term plans, Gordon being able to play the outfield will give him more opportunities to help the team. Of course, the team still has Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig and Andre Ethier all vying for time on the outfield.

There are those in the Dodgers organization who believe the speedy Gordon is a better fit in the outfield, anyway. He has not been the strongest shortstop defensively and the position does not allow his quickness to make up for mistakes. Many opposing teams interested in trading for him also see him as an outfielder moving forward.

Over parts of three major league seasons, Gordon has hit .256/.301/.312 with 66 stolen bases. He is a career .300 hitter in the minors with a .360 OBP.
