The Arizona Diamondbacks will be looking to add a left-handed power bat during the offseason, general manager Kevin Towers told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

Arizona will attempt to work out a trade during the winter for another hitter instead of signing one in free agency.

Right-handed hitting Paul Goldschmidt provided the power in the Diamondbacks lineup during the season, leading the team with 36 home runs. Martin Prado, another righty, had the second most homers on the team with 14. Overall, Arizona was 11th in the National League in home runs.

Towers discussed the need for another power hitter, but indicated that the team will explore players available in trades instead of the free agent market:
“We’re going to look at free agents, but I think this is one of the weaker free-agent markets I’ve seen in some time, so that might lead us toward looking at trade partners more. I think there’s some clubs we might match up pretty well with, considering they’ve got depth in areas we have needs and we have depth in areas where they have needs.”
Arizona had a disappointing 81-81 record, finishing 11 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Both Towers and manager Kirk Gibson have contracts that expire at the end of 2014, although Diamondbacks ownership hold club options for 2015 and 2016.
