Pirates vs. Cardinals score: Pittsburgh leads 7-1

St. Louis gifted an insurance run to Pittsburgh in the 7th.

The Pirates are now two runs away from flipping yesterday's script on St. Louis. Pittsburgh lost 9-1 in the opening game, but have now increased their lead in Game 2 to 7-1. They got a little bit of help from the Cardinals along the way.

St. Louis called on Kevin Siegrist and his 0.45 ERA to start the 7th inning, and he started things off well by getting Marlon Byrd to pop out to 3rd base. Here's David Freese with the routine catch:

Pedro Alvarez moved Byrd to third with a groundout, and Russell Martin drove him in with a sacrifice fly to increase Pittsburgh's lead to 6-1.

The Pirates didn’t score again in that inning, but they did end Gerrit Cole’s night by lifting him for a pinch-hitter. The rookie was fantastic in his postseason debut, allowing just two hits and a walk in six innings. He threw only 86 pitches.

Left-hander Tony Watson came on for the Pirates in the bottom of the 7th and worked himself into and out of a jam without allowing a run. Then, Starling Marte led off the top of the 8th by doing this:

Pittsburgh now leads 7-1. The Cardinals are coming up in the 9th with one last chance to make a comeback.
