Red Sox add a pair after Rays’ miscues

The Boston Red Sox extended their advantage to 3-0 over the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the American League Division Series after a pair of miscues by the home team.

First, Shane Victorino hit a ball into the hole between shortstop and third base that Yunel Escobar got to but was unable to corral.

Jacoby Ellsbury, who doubled in the previous at-bat, hustled to third on the play. He appeared to be tagged on the thigh by Evan Longoria prior to reaching the base, but he was ruled safe on the play.

Then, with Dustin Pedroia at the plate, Alex Cobb fired a fastball past Jose Molina, allowing Ellsbury to score. After Pedroia grounded out, David Ortiz stepped up and singled to the opposite field, plating Victorino.

Much like the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier on Monday, the Rays haven't been able to do much offensively, so any added runs in Boston's column won't do them any favors.
