Joe Girardi undecided between Yankees’ offer and Cubs’ job

The Yankees made a strong offer to Girardi, but he has yet to sign a new deal.

Joe Girardi still has not signed the contract offered to him by the Yankees as he remains "torn" between the team he has managed the past six years and his hometown Chicago Cubs, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Cubs have not made an offer to Girardi, though they have shown a strong interest in acquiring him. The two sides could not have discussions until Girardi’s contract with the Yankees officially expires at the end of October.

The Yankees could give Chicago permission to talk to him, but New York has given indication they would not do so unless they believed he would not remain with the team.

Girardi was reportedly offered a three year contract worth between $12-15 million to sign with the Yankees, but would like to explore the Cubs opening. New York has allegedly made it clear to Girardi that their offer would not remain on the table were he to begin discussions with another team.

Chicago believes they will know by Tuesday if Girardi will rebuff the Yankees’ offer and enter discussions with the Cubs. They do not want to put off their search for a new manager until November unless they know they have a shot at Girardi. They have already begun interviewing other candidates for the position.

Girardi has led the Yankees to a 564-408 record in his six years with the team, winning one World Series.
