The St. Louis Cardinals have jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates after two innings in Game 5 of the National League Division Series on Wednesday.
Pirates vs. Cardinals NLDS Game 5 score update: St. Louis holds 2-0 lead after 2 innings
Oh hello, David Freese.
David Freese, who entered the game 2-for-13 at the plate in the series, hit a two-out, two-run home run off of Pirates starter Gerrit Cole in the second inning. Cole cruised through the first five batters of the game before walking Jon Jay, setting up Freese's latest heroic postseason long ball.
Cardinals hurler Adam Wainwright allowed a walk in the first and a single in the second, but neither resulted in any damage.
Wainwright struck out Andrew McCutchen and induced a ground out off the bat of Justin Morneau after surrendering a pass to Neil Walker in the first. An inning later, Marlon Byrd's lead-off single was nullified when Matt Carpenter snagged Pedro Alvarez's line drive and doubled Byrd off of first base.
