Red Sox showing interest in A.J. Pierzynski

Boston has been active in catcher rumors as the team appears ready to move on from Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox have shown an interest in free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski as a possible short-term solution behind the plate, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.

Pierzynski, 36, signed a one year deal worth $7.5 million to play for the Rangers in 2013. Over 134 games, he hit .272/.297/.425 with 17 home runs. He won a silver slugger award in 2012 with the White Sox when he posted an .827 OPS and hit a career-high 27 homers.

Boston's starting catcher of the past three years, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, is also a free agent, leaving the Red Sox looking for a potential replacement. They have been in touch with Saltalamacchia's agents, but at this point it appears the team is willing to move on.

Pierzynski is not the only free agent catcher on the radar for the Red Sox. They have talked to Brian McCann, who is regarded as the best best backstop on the market. However, McCann might command too large a contract for the Red Sox' taste. The team has also talked about Carlos Ruiz, as well.

The Red Sox have two catching prospects coming up the chain in Blake Swihart and Christian Vazquez. If the team sees either player as the future of the position, a short-term deal for a catcher this offseason makes sense.
