Ted Lilly aiming for a return to the majors

The lefty will pitch in the Venezuelan Winter League, hoping to prove major league teams that he is healthy.

Free agent starting pitcher Ted Lilly will pitch in the Venezuelan Winter League and hopes to return to the majors next season, reports Ignacio Serrano of El Emergente (h/t Dylan Hernandez).

Lilly signed with Navegantes del Magallanes, and arrived in Venezuela on Saturday. The veteran starter plans to pitch through Christmas, hoping to prove to major league teams that he is healthy.

The southpaw only made five starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013, going 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA. He struggled with his command and keeping the ball in the park, issuing ten walks and allowing four home runs over 23 innings.

Lilly battled a number of injuries in 2013 that kept him off the field and limited his effectiveness, hitting the disabled list three separate times with shoulder, ribcage and neck injuries. The Dodgers designated Lilly for assignment in late July.

The San Francisco Giants nearly signed Lilly to a minor-league contract later in the season, but the two sides could not agree on a call-up date.
