MLB coaches roundup: Mariners to interview Trent Jewett

Taking a look at the latest news involving MLB coaching staffs.

Jennifer Hilderbrand-US PRESSWIR

All 30 MLB teams have managers in place for the 2014 season, but other coaching roles are still being filled throughout baseball. Let’s take a look at some of the latest news involving MLB coaches who are either staying with their old teams or serving different roles on new ones.

Mariners to interview Jewett

The Seattle Mariners have received permission from the Washington Nationals to interview third base coach Trent Jewett, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Jewett will interview for the Mariners' bench coach position. The 49-year-old served as the Pirates' third base coach from 2001-02 under new Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon. Jewett also interviewed for the Nationals' manager job, which eventually went to Matt Williams.

Yankees retain entire coaching staff

The New York Yankees announced that Joe Girardi's entire coaching staff will return in 2014, reports David Waldstein of the New York Times.

Girardi's coaching staff will return despite the Yankees missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The coaches on the staff include pitching coach Larry Rothschild, hitting coach Kevin Long, bench coach Tony Pena, third base coach Rob Thomson, infield coach Mick Kelleher and bullpen coach Mike Harkey.

Rowson leaving Cubs

Chicago Cubs hitting coach James Rowson is leaving the organization for the Yankees, reports Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

Rowson has been the Cubs hitting coach for the past one-plus seasons. The 37-year-old will serve as the Yankees’ minor-league hitting instructor, a position he held from 2008-11. Rowson joined the Cubs as a minor-league hitting instructor in 2012 before being promoted to the big leagues after Chicago fired Rudy Jaramillo.
