Cardinals have shown ‘significant interest’ in Troy Tulowitzki

St. Louis is looking for an upgrade over Pete Kozma at shortstop, and Troy Tulowitzki appears at the top of their wishlist.

The St. Louis Cardinals have shown "significant interest" in Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

The two sides have already begun informal talks and are expected to discuss parameters of a trade during the GM and Owners meetings this week, according to Passan. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told Jim Bowden of Sirius XM earlier in the week that he would like to trade some of the Cardinals pitching depth for a “young, controllable shortstop.”

Tulowitzki, 29, is one of the top shortstops in baseball. The right-hander hit .312/.391/.540 over 512 plate appearances, and has accumulated at least 5.5 fWAR in four of the past five seasons.

Rockies owner Dick Monfort has publicly stated that the team does not plan to move the shortstop, but have privately talked about freeing themselves from the $134 million Tulowitzki is due over the next seven seasons, writes Passan. Tulowitzki does not have a no-trade clause in his contract, but would receive a $2 million “assignment bonus” if traded, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Cardinals have also asked the Texas Rangers about the availability of Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar, according to Passan.
