Braves new ballpark could receive $450 million in public financing

The Braves are expected to receive public financing for their new stadium, and early reports put the figure at $450 million.

The initial plan to move the Atlanta Braves to Cobb County involves $450 million in financing from the county, reports Greg Bluestein and Jim Galloway of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The team announced Monday that they plan to build a new stadium in the suburban county located northwest of downtown Atlanta. The Braves lease with Turner Field expires on Dec. 31, 2016, and the club plans to move into the new stadium for the 2017 season.

The $450 million figure is preliminary. It is not clear whether the financing will hold or what kind of financing it is, according to Bluestein and Galloway. Atlanta is already providing public funding for the new Falcons stadium with money levied from a hotel tax, which may have drained the city’s will to provide more public funds for a new stadium.

The Braves will meet with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Georgia Governor Nathan Deal at the state Capitol on Wednesday to discuss the decision. The governor is not expected to intervene with the potential move.
