Padres intend to discuss contract extension with Chase Headley

An extension isn’t close, but the team would like to open negotiations again with the third baseman.

The San Diego Padres are "likely" to discuss a long-term contract extension with third baseman Chase Headley during the ongoing general manager meetings, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Headley broke out in 2012, hitting .286/.376/.498 with a career high 31 home runs, up from a previous high of 12. Following that season he was dogged by trade rumors, then extension rumors at the beginning of the 2013 season. However, Headley said he did not want to discuss a new deal in-season.

The Padres started the 2013 season with Headley on the disabled list as he missed a month with a fractured thumb. After returning to the lineup, he did not look like the same hitter as in 2012, hitting .250/.347/.400 with 13 home runs.

Negotiations between the two sides may be difficult as Headley’s representatives will likely focus primarily on his big 2012 campaign while the Padres may focus on the rest of his good, but not great, career. For now, an extension still appears unlikely.
