The Boston Red Sox contacted the Giants about the trade availability of third baseman Pablo Sandoval, reports Peter Gammons.

The big third baseman isn’t likely to go anywhere, but Boston was hoping to make him their new first baseman.

Any sort of trade for Sandoval does not appear to be close, however, as the Giants are not looking to trade him. General manager Brian Sabean told Gammons they “need his bat.” Still, Sandoval will be a free agent after the 2014 season, so it is conceivable that San Francisco could change its mind.
Were the Red Sox to acquire Sandoval, they were hoping to move him to first base to fill the team's hole at the position. Boston is not completely sold on re-signing Mike Napoli to a big deal to stay at first base and is exploring other options, though they say they are willing to bring Napoli back.
Sandoval hit .278/.341/.417 with 14 home runs in 2013. He has hit 20 home runs twice and been named to two All-Star teams in his six-year career.
