Carlos Beltran free agency: Yankees ‘definitely serious’ about OF

Beltran would be an upgrade in the outfield as the Yankees look to have a busy offseason.

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees are "definitely serious" about making every attempt to sign free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

New York has been heavily talked about this season as they appear to be in on a number of free agents, including Beltran, Brian McCann, Hiroki Kuroda, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, Stephen Drew, and Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka.

Signing Beltran could be a relatively cost-effective way to replace Granderson in the outfield or at designated hitter. The Yankees have Brett Gardner set in center field with the aging Ichiro Suzuki and Alfonso Soriano on the corners along with Vernon Wells. Beltran would likely be a clear upgrade over most of those players.

Beltran, 36, is likely looking for a similar contract to the two year, $26 million deal he just finished with the Cardinals. However, he has been heavily rumored to be a hot commodity this year and could see his value soar. A signing team will have to surrender a draft pick, but the Yankees are not concerned about that with three sandwich picks possibly coming back from their own free agents.

In 2013, Beltran hit .296/.339/.491 with 24 home runs over 145 games.
