The Rangers are not looking to hand out a big multiyear deal to a pitcher in the offseason, meaning they are likely out of the Masahiro Tanaka sweepstakes, reports Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“We’re not right now looking to give out a big multiyear deal for a starter,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “That’s not what our need is. We’ve got guys we really like that are signed. I’m more focused on the position player side of the club.”

Texas has Yu Darvish leading the staff with Derek Holland, Martin Perez, and Alexi Ogando slotting in behind him. Matt Harrison is hoping to be fully recovered from back surgery at the start of the season with Nick Tepesch a possibility to slip into the fifth starter role if Harrison has a setback. The team is also having conversations with Matt Garza's representatives about a possible return to Texas.
The Rangers had been an early favorite to win the bidding for Tanaka, who is expected to command a record posting fee with a big contract on top of that. With room to strengthen the back of the rotation, the team’s winning bid for Darvish led some to believe it could go for a second Japanese ace.
