Yankees exercising patience in free agency

Despite having a bevy of money, the Yankees are trying to slow-play free agency.

The New York Yankees are looking exercise patience in free agency this offseason, letting the prices for many players drop a bit, according to ESPN.com.

New York has money to go after rumored targets such as catcher Brian McCann and outfielders Carlos Beltran and Shin-Soo Choo. Additionally, the Yankees prime objective is believed to be re-signing Robinson Cano, who according to multiple reports is looking to be paid around $30 million per season.

Beltran is rumored to want a three or four-year deal, something the Yankees don’t seem comfortable with. Beltran, who is 36 years old and showing decline in the field, received the qualifying offer from the Cardinals, as did McCann, who is thought to be searching for an $100 million contract, perhaps a number the Yankees are hoping will shrink if there are not many teams getting in on the bidding.

Of course, the risk is that another team comes in and offers a nice payday that a player like Beltran or McCann takes. With Cano, it is likely New York would have the final chance to match any offer. It’s worth pointing out, too, that by waiting, the Yankees will have a better sense of whether third baseman Alex Rodriguez -- and his $27.5 million average annual value for 2014 -- will be suspended or not, giving them more or less money to play with.
