Stephen Drew free agency: SS moving on from Red Sox

Boston will have a new full-time shortstop, while Drew is out looking for work.

Jonathan Daniel

The Boston Red Sox enjoyed winning a World Series with Stephen Drew as the primary shortstop, but now it appears the two sides will part ways, according to ESPN.

Drew is being offered multi-year deals by a litany of teams, something the Red Sox are not willing to do. Boston has one of the game's best prospects in shortstop Xander Bogaerts, and are likely to give him the job starting in 2014.

Last season, Drew hit .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs, helping to lead Boston to an AL East crown and ultimately a championship. However, Drew hit only .111 in the postseason, keeping his spot in the lineup almost entirely due to his defensive presence.

Drew is one of the many free agents that the Red Sox have to make decisions on, including outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and first baseman Mike Napoli. All but Saltalamacchia were submitted the qualifying offer, meaning the Red Sox could have quite the pool of draft picks and budget to work with in the 2014 draft.
