Chris Young free agency: Red Sox looking at outfielder

After one year in Oakland, Young could wind up with the defending champions.

Ezra Shaw

The Boston Red Sox have interest in free-agent outfielder Chris Young should Jacoby Ellsbury find employment elsewhere, according to ESPN's Jerry Cransick.

Young spent 2013 with the Oakland Athletics, putting up a dismal season. In 107 games, Young hit .200 with a .280 on-base percentage, driving 12 home runs and knocking in 40. Young is a very good defensive outfielder who can play either center or in the corners, giving him value, especially in the spacious center and right field dimensions of Fenway Park.

Should Ellsbury leave, Young would likely slot into center field. Despite his hitting, Young has some value at the dish with some power and good speed.Six times, Young has stolen double-digit bases in a season.

Young made an All-Star team back in 2010 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In that season, Young hit 27 homers and amassed 94 RBIs, while hitting a career-high .257. Over his eight-year career, Young has a .235 average and a .315 OBP.
