Ted Lilly free agency: Pitcher looking to return from injury

The veteran is trying to come back from a painful neck problem last year.

USA TODAY Sports

Ted Lilly was forced to miss all but five starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013, dealing with constant neck pain. Now, Lilly is looking to make a return this season, according to Sportsnet.

Lilly is coming off a three-year, $39 million deal with the Dodgers. The veteran is pitching for the Navegantes del Magallanes in the Venezuelan league, trying to get five or six starts under his belt to prove he is healthy. So far, Lilly feels good after having a procedure to cauterize the nerve endings on the right side of his ailing neck.

The southpaw, if healthy, could make a nice under-the-radar signing for a team looking to add an arm to the back end of its rotation. At 37 years old and coming off injury, it would be stunning if Lilly got more than a one-year deal.

Throughout his career which began at the major league level in 1999 with the Monreal Expos, Lilly is 130-113 with a 4.14 ERA.
