MLB free agency: Carlos Ruiz likely to re-sign with Phillies

Ruiz has multiple suitors, but seems likely to re-sign with Philadelphia.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Ruiz still seems likely to re-sign with the Philadelphia Phillies, reports Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

Ruiz has emerged as one of the hotter names early in the offseason. The Colorado Rockies offered Ruiz a multi-year deal, while the Boston Red Sox have also shown interest in the catcher. Ruiz reportedly has a two-year, $20 million offer on the table but has not yet signed a contract.

Zolecki speculates that the Phillies, who have already signed Marlon Byrd to a two-year, $16 million contract, may have made the offer to Ruiz. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has stated that re-signing Ruiz is a top priority, but there are "several candidates" currently available for the starting catcher position in Philadelphia next year.

Ruiz struggled offensively last year, batting .268/.320/.368. The 34-year-old is a career .274/.358/.412 hitter and is considered one of the top defensive catchers in baseball. Ruiz is hitting free-agency for the first time, and could looking for the biggest payday of his career.
