MLB free agency: Yankees interested in Kendrys Morales

Morales has joined the long list of Yankees potential free agent targets.

The New York Yankees are considering free agent first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

The Yankees, per usual, have been linked to a number of high-priced free agents this offseason, including Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann, Stephen Drew and Matt Garza. New York would like to improve a number of positions after finishing 12 games back of the Boston Red Sox in 2013. The club also has a number of players testing the open market, including second baseman Robinson Cano.

Morales is coming off a solid season with the Mariners, hitting .277/.336/.449 over 657 plate appearances. The switch-hitter could start at DH and provide insurance for Mark Teixeira at first base. The Yankees have received positive reports about his clubhouse presence, according to Heyman.

The Mariners extended Morales a qualifying offer, which he rejected. The Yankees will have to surrender their top available draft-pick if they sign the switch-hitter.
