Max Scherzer: ‘I want to be a Detroit Tiger’

Scherzer wants to remain in Detroit, but the two sides have yet to discuss a contract extension.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Max Scherzer wants to stay with the Detroit Tigers next season, telling MLB Network Radio "I don't want to be traded."

Scherzer, who recently won the 2013 AL Cy Young Award, has been the subject of trade rumors during the offseason. The starter is scheduled for free agency after the 2014 season, and should command a large contract extension after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA last year.

The right-hander helped the Tigers win the AL Central and reach the ALCS, and hopes the team will remain intact, stating:

"I got a great thing going in Detroit, we have a great team. I hope they don't mess with it. I want to be a Detroit Tiger and hopefully get back to the playoffs and try to do the ultimate goal and win something for the city of Detroit.

"We got a great team. We got great guys around. I got great teammates around me. And then we got Miguel Cabrera. Who would want to leave and actually face that guy?"

Detroit has already doled out high-priced contracts to Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Justin Verlander and may not be able to afford a fourth contract. Scherzer admitted that no dialogue has taken place between the two sides, but Scherzer told Chris Iott of MLive.com that he is open to a new contract.
