Rockies, LaTroy Hawkins agree on 1-year deal

The Rockies bolstered their bullpen, which finished last in the NL in ERA in 2013, with the addition of the veteran free-agent closer.

The Colorado Rockies and free-agent relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins agreed on a one-year, $2.5 million deal on Monday, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

The deal is pending a physical -- which is scheduled for Thursday -- and also includes a $2.25 million option for 2015 that can be bought out by the Rockies for $250,000.

Hawkins will serve as the Rockies' closer, per Nightengale, taking over for Rex Brothers, who will return to a setup role despite posting a 1.74 ERA with 19 saves in 2013. Hawkins last spent time closing games for the first time since 2009. He was solid in the role, converting 13 of 16 save attempts while sporting a sub-3.00 ERA. Hawkins and Brothers greatly differ in one area in particular; Hawkins walked only 1.3 batters per nine innings in 2013 while Brothers issued nearly five free passes per nine.

The Mets, Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians all had interest in the 41-year-old right-hander, notes Nightengale.
