MLB free agency: Orioles interested in Jhonny Peralta playing LF

Peralta could give the Orioles flexibility at a few positions next season.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in free agent Jhonny Peralta as a left fielder, reports Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

Peralta has spent most of his career at shortstop with mixed results defensively, although he appears to have made strides in the field over the past three seasons. The Detroit Tigers used Peralta in left field during the postseason despite little experience there; the team had acquired defensive wizard Jose Iglesias before the trade deadline, and Peralta had recently returned from a 50-game PED suspension.

The 31-year-old had a strong campaign in 2013, batting .303/.358/.457 over 448 plate appearances. He has seen his offensive numbers fluctuate from season-to-season; Peralta hit .239 in 2012, but posted a .299 batting average in 2011.

Baltimore is searching for a left fielder to replace Nate McLouth. Peralta could platoon with McLouth in left if the Orioles sign both, and could also give the team some infield flexibility in case Manny Machado does not return by Opening Day, or if Baltimore decides to move J.J. Hardy.
