The Cardinals are continuing the remodel of their infield, reportedly closing in on a multi-year contract with shortstop Jhonny Peralta, per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

Peralta, 31, hit .303/.358/.457 with 30 doubles and 11 home runs in 107 games for the Tigers in 2013. Peralta was the everyday shortstop for Detroit until serving a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal in August. Upon his return Peralta played mostly left field for the Tigers, with new acquisition Jose Iglesias manning shortstop.

The Cardinals were the National League's best team in 2013 with 97 wins, but their shortstops hit just .222/.280/.303 with four home runs. Pete Kozma started 113 games at the position for St. Louis in 2013, and Daniel Descalso started 49 games. Peralta has averaged .278/.334/.438, 29 doubles and 15 home runs in the last three seasons.

Peralta made $6 million in 2013 with the Tigers.

St. Louis on Friday traded third baseman David Freese and pitcher Fernando Salas to the Angels for outfielders Peter Bourjos and Randal Grichuk.
