Jason Kubel free agency: OF interested in reunion with Twins

Kubel spent his first seven MLB seasons in Minnesota and could aid a struggling offense.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Free agent outfielder Jason Kubel would be interested in reuniting with the Minnesota Twins this offseason, reports the Pioneer Press.

The Twins drafted Kubel in 2000 and he spent his first seven professional seasons with the team, garnering MVP votes in 2009 when he hit .300 with a .907 OPS and 28 home runs. He signed a two-year deal with a team option for a third year with the Diamondbacks prior to 2012, but was traded to the Indians midway through 2013. Cleveland opted not to pick up the option, making Kubel a free agent.

The Twins are expected to prioritize pitching in the offseason, but they would certainly be happy to add any offense to their lineup as well. Minnesota scored just 614 runs in 2013 and did not have a single player reach 20 home runs. In the non-Joe Mauer category, Justin Morneau led the rest of the team in OPS at a .741 clip. He was traded to the Pirates midseason.

Kubel, 31, suffered through a down year in 2013, hitting just five home runs with a .610 OPS in 97 games while dealing with a variety of injuries. However, in 2012 he hit a career high 30 home runs and posted an .833 OPS.
