Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Francisco Liriano has been named the National League Comeback Player of the Year, Major League Baseball announced on Monday.

Liriano helped pitch the Pirates to their first postseason berth since 1992 by going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA and racking up 166 strikeouts in 161 innings. He overcame a disastrous 2012 campaign in which he posted a 5.34 ERA while walking five batters per nine innings for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox.

2013 marks the second time Liriano has won a Comeback Player of the Year award. He was the American League’s winner in 2010, when he went 14-10 with a 3.62 ERA and surrendered a league-low 0.4 home runs per nine innings after struggling to a 5-13 record and 5.80 ERA in 2009.

Liriano is the first Pirates player ever to win the award, which was implemented before the 2005 season.
