The Red Sox appear to be leaning towards moving on from Jarrod Saltalamacchia behind the plate, having not called the three-year starter about a new contract yet and not making a qualifying offer. With backup David Ross being the only other catcher on the roster, Boston will need to search the market for a new starter at the position. McCann is the only free agent clearly better than Saltalamacchia.

While B.B. Abbot, managing partner of Jet Sports Management, says McCann would be interested in the Red Sox, he refrained from saying Boston had made any overtures to his client.
“Certainly Boston is a city that Brian likes, and he has always respected the organization and the front office,” Abbott told the Herald. “Obviously, the coaching staff and clubhouse unity is attractive. He has also always been fascinated with the fan base, their support of the Red Sox and the history of the organization. Boston would certainly be a place that would be a consideration for Brian.”
McCann has spent his entire nine-year career with the Braves, but appears likely to change organizations as a first-time free agent. He hit .256 with a 796 OPS in 2013 and has hit at least 20 home runs in seven of his eight full seasons. McCann is expected to receive at least $75 million guaranteed in free agency.
The Braves offered McCann a qualifying offer, meaning the Red Sox would have to forfeit their first round pick in 2013 were they to sign him.
