The New York Mets have contacted free agent Rafael Furcal and are interested in signing him to be their 2014 shortstop, reports the New Jersey Star-Ledger.
Mets interested in Rafael Furcal
The free agent shortstop has not played since 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery during spring training of 2013.

Following Tommy John surgery in March, Furcal missed all of the 2013 season while under contract with the Cardinals. He hit .264/.325/.346 in 2012 and was named to his third All Star team.
The Mets have had no qualms about admitting shortstop Ruben Tejada was no longer a key part of the team's future. The 24-year-old suffered through several injuries in 2013, seeing playing time in just 57 games and hitting .202/.259/.260. He has yet to break a 700 OPS over a four year career.
Furcal made $13 million over the last two years in St. Louis. Coming off a major arm surgery and now 36, Furcal figures to get a smaller deal this offseason. Other free agent options like Stephen Drew and Jhonny Peralta figure to get more expensive multi-year deals that the Mets may not be willing to give out.
