Jeff Samardzija not in a hurry to sign extension with Cubs

Samardzija still has two years of team control and may be worth more money with a good season in 2014.

Dilip Vishwanat

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher is not in a hurry to sign an extension with the team, saying there is plenty of time to work out a deal, reports David Kaplan of CSN Chicago.

“I have two more years of arbitration so there is a lot of time to get something done,” Samardzija told reporters.

There have been rumors that the Cubs may be looking to trade the right-hander, with the Arizona Diamondbacks discussing a deal with the team this offseason. The Cubs would like to figure out Samardzija's future soon. If he appears unwilling to sign an extension in the future or if Chicago does not believe he is worth it, this may be the best time to trade him. Two years of team control will net a better return than one.

Samardzija, 28, began his big league career primarily as a reliever before being moved to the rotation full-time in 2012 and posting a 3.81 ERA. In 2013, he had a 3.34 ERA through june but struggled through the second half and finished the season with a 4.34 ERA and 1.35 WHIP to go along with 214 strikeouts in 213⅔ innings.
