Rays officially sign David Dejesus to new deal

DeJesus will receive $10.5 in guaranteed money over the life of the contract.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays officially announced a two year deal with outfielder David DeJesus, reports Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune. The contract is worth $10.5 million and includes an option for 2016.

Under the terms of the extension, DeJesus will earn $4.25 million in 2014, down from the $6.5 million he would have made after his option was picked up. He will then make another $5 million in 2015 with another $5 million coming in 2016 if that option is exercised. If the Rays decline the option, they will pay him a $1 million buyout.

The Rays acquired DeJesus from the Nationals Aug. 23. Tampa Bay sent minor league pitcher Matthew Spann to Washington to complete the deal.

DeJesus hit .260/.328/.413 over 35 regular season games with the Rays and collected three hits in nine at-bats during the ALDS. Overall, he hit .251/.327/.402 in a 2013 season split between three teams.
