Nationals rumors: Team could trade for Max Scherzer or David Price

The Nationals would like to trade for a top-flight pitcher in the offseason to bolster their rotation.

Rob Carr

The Washington Nationals are hoping to add an "elite" starting pitcher to their rotation via trade, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Washington could be players for both David Price and Max Scherzer, with Rosenthal saying Scherzer makes more sense for the team. Scherzer would cost less in prospects than Price would given the fact that he has one fewer year of team control remaining, and the current Nationals farm system suits Detroit's needs better than Tampa Bay's.

The Nationals already have one of the more formidable rotations in the MLB with Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmerman as their top three. Ross Detwiler could fill one of the two remaining spots while Tanner Roark and Taylor Jordan finished 2013 starting games for Washington.

Thought to be on par with the Braves at the beginning of 2013, the Nationals hope to continue to compete in 2014. Adding one more top-flight pitcher would certainly put them a level up from where they were previously.
