Phillies interested in trade for David Price

While a trade between the two sides appears unlikely, the Phillies have at least looked into the idea.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been discussing the possibility of trading for Rays ace David Price, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Phillies currently have aces in Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels at the top of their rotation, but are lacking depth. Roy Halladay is unlikely to be back with the team after struggles and injury woes the past two years, leaving the bottom three in the rotation extremely unsettled. The only players left on the roster to have started a game for the team in 2013 are Jonathan Pettibone and Ethan Martin.

Price would certainly be an enormous upgrade for the Phillies, but there are questions as to whether the team would be able to pull off such a deal. The team has little in the way of top prospects and Price figures to command a high return in a trade.

In addition, for the Phillies to work their way back to contention they have several holes that need filling. One big move will not fix a team that lost 89 games in 2013. General manager Ruben Amaro is likely to make a series of smaller moves rather than create a big splash in the offseason.

The Rays have been rumored to be looking at trading Price while he still has two years of team control remaining. Waiting longer would likely diminish the return for the former Cy Young winner.
