Carlos Ruiz free agency: Rockies plan on making multi-year offer

Ruiz would be a big upgrade defensively at catcher for the Rockies while allowing Wilin Rosario to see playing time elsewhere.

Doug Pensinger

The Colorado Rockies have a heavy interest in Carlos Ruiz and are expected to make a multi-year deal to the catcher this week, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

With Todd Helton retired, the Rockies are hoping to give Wilin Rosario more at-bats at first base and possibly even the outfield. Not known as a great defensive catcher, Rosario hit .292/.315/.486 in 2013 and has slugged 49 home runs over the past two seasons.

Ruiz, 34, would certainly give Colorado a strong defensive presence at backstop. He also is a decent bat for a catcher. He had a down year in 2013 with a 688 OPS, but posted a 935 OPS in 2012 and generally gets on base very well. He has spent his entire career with the Phillies. Philadelphia is expected to try and keep him while there have been rumors that Ruiz has multiple other suitors already.

The Rockies are also interested in shoring up their bullpen as they eye relievers Joe Smith and Jose Veras in free agency.
