David Robertson might not replace Mariano Rivera for Yankees

The general thought was Robertson would be the next closer in pinstripes, but the Yankees say it is no sure thing.

The New York Yankees are not willing to name anybody the closer yet, according to the New York Daily News.

General manager Brian Cashman said no determination has been made yet as to whether David Robertson will go from setup man to closer. Cashman is going to search the free agent market first and then let spring training run its course before making a decision on who gets to be the man taking over for Mariano Rivera. Per the Daily News:

“We haven’t anointed anybody the closer, so I don’t know,” Cashman said. “I know Robertson wants it. But we’ll see how the winter shakes out and how the competition in spring training takes place.

“We’re going to look at everybody and anything and see where the winter takes us. The bottom line is, we have to get a collection of talent to bring to spring training. The cream rises to the top, and we have to find as much cream as possible.”

A few names linked to potentially replacing Rivera from the free agents list include Joe Nathan and Grant Balfour. Nathan, 38, is a New York native and pitched very well last season for the Texas Rangers. The former Minnesota Twins star has a 9.00 ERA in the postseason though, certainly a red flag for the Yankees.

Balfour, who will turn 36 in December, made his first All-Star appearance this season for the Oakland A’s. Balfour converted 38 of 41 save opportunities, helping the A’s win their second consecutive AL West crown.
