Twins prospect Miguel Sano shut down for winter

One of Minnesota’s top prospects has to rest for a while after injuring his elbow in winter ball.

USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano has been shut down for the remainder of the winter ball season with an elbow injury, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Sano strained the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which calls for five weeks of rest before getting into a rehab program. Sano visited renowned Dr. James Andrews to make sure he only had a strain, and the diagnosis was confirmed to the relief of the Twins.

The 20-year-old is expected to be ready for major league camp after he completes his rehab programs both in the Dominican Republic and Fort Myers, Fla. Sano only played two games in the Dominican Winter League before having to sit out with the creaky elbow.

Sano had a monster year in the minor leagues this year, hitting .280 with 35 home runs and 103 RBIs between Class A Fort Myers and Class AA New Britain.
