Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is a free agent, and he is drawing plenty of interest, according to CSN Philly.

Boston may need a catcher, and Ruiz has proven to be a capable backstop.

The Boston Red Sox are one of the teams looking into the prospect of signing Ruiz, who might be a replacement for Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Ruiz is not the long-term answer for anybody at this point in his career, but for a short-term fix many teams could do a lot worse.
Ruiz, who will be 35 years old come spring training, hit .268 with a .320 on-base percentage in 92 games. In his eight-year career, Ruiz has a .274 average and 57 home runs.
All that said, the Phillies would really like to retain Ruiz’s services. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has made his feelings very clear about bringing Ruiz back to the city of brotherly love, per the article:
“He is a priority just because of the position,” Amaro said at season’s end. “We don’t have anybody who is going to step in. [Cameron] Rupp has done a nice job. [Erik] Kratz, when he played, did OK. But I can’t anoint either one of those guys as an everyday catcher.”
Ruiz will probably be the fourth most sought-after catcher in the free agent class behind A.J. Pierzynski, Brian McCann and Saltalamacchia.
