Dodgers-Padres brawl: Carlos Quentin, Matt Kemp ejected after Zack Greinke HBP

Benches cleared in the sixth inning between the Padres and Dodgers on Thursday night at Petco Park in San Diego.

USA TODAY Sports

The series finale between the Dodgers and Padres took an ugly turn in the sixth inning on Thursday, as a bench-clearing brawl marred the game. Zack Greinke hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, and Quentin charged the mound to start the melee.

Greinke appeared to be hurt in the ensuing brawl, as he exited the game after being checked by Dodgers team trainer Sue Falsone.

Quentin, who leads all of baseball with 97 hit-by-pitches since the start of the 2008 season, was hit in the wrist on Tuesday and missed Wednesday’s game. He took exception to Greinke making him the tying run on base in a one-run game.

Matt Kemp was also ejected in the scrum, and replays showed he may have put his hands on an umpire, which means a likely suspension is forthcoming.

Jerry Hairston Jr., a former Padre who appeared to play peacemaker as both benches cleared, began yelling toward the Padres dugout at first baseman Yonder Alonso, and the two teams came together for a second time.
