Yu Darvish nearly perfect vs. Astros

Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish was perfect through 26 batters before allowing a ground single to Marwin Gonzalez.

USA TODAY Sports

Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish came within an out of recording the second perfect game in Texas Rangers history. Facing the Houston Astros Tuesday, Darvish struck out 14 batters while attempting to throw the 24th perfect game in MLB history.

Astros shortstop (and .243 hitter) Marwin Gonzalez broke up the no-hitter with a grounder up the middle for a single.

Darvish allowed just one fly ball out of the infield and recorded eight groundouts while overpowering the first 26 Astros he faced. He threw 111 pitches, 78 for strikes, before Rangers manager Ron Washington pulled him from the game.

The Rangers led the game 7-0 when Darvish exited. Ian Kinsler hit a home run, and Elvis Andrus and Lance Berkman each had three hits.

Kenny Rogers threw the organization's only perfect game on July 28, 1994. This would have been the earliest perfect game thrown in MLB history. The record of April 21, tossed by White Sox right-hander Phil Humber in 2012, still stands. It was Chicago's 14th game that season.
