MLB viewing guide: Tuesday schedule spotlight
Two doubleheaders and Cy Young Award winning pitchers highlight the day’s action.

Day | Home SP | Visit. SP | Time | Where |
23-Apr | Jeff Francis (1-1), 8.25 ERA, 2.94 FIP | Mike Minor (2-1), 0.95 ERA, 2.18 FIP | 3:10 pm ET | ROOT Sports, Sports South |
Jon Garland (2-0), 3.32 ERA, 3.12 FIP | Julio Teheran (0-0), 7.31 ERA, 7.27 FIP | 8:40 pm ET | ROOT Sports, Sports South |
After this battle of the NL’s best teams got snowed out yesterday, the Braves and Rockies will try to play two. The forecast seems to be clear, but Denver snow can still strike with great force at any time. If the games are played, each gives one team a distinct advantage on the mound, though, at Coors, no pitcher is truly a sure thing.
Day | Home SP | Visit. SP | Time | Where |
23-Apr | Kevin Correia (1-1), 2.95 ERA, 3.91 FIP | Ricky Nolasco (0-2), 3.86 ERA, 4.18 FIP | 2:10 pm ET | FOX Sports-Florida, FOX Sports-North |
Mike Pelfrey (2-1), 7.30 ERA, 3.34 FIP | Jose Fernandez (0-1), 3.60 ERA, 1.95 FIP | 8:10 pm ET | FOX Sports-Florida, FOX Sports-North |
Let's play two? Let's play four! In the second doubleheader of the day, and the second with an agreeable forecast, we get two less exciting teams, but the opportunity to watch young Fernandez in a big park like Target Field will make it more difficult to turn down. Although he was rocked by the Reds in his last time out, the Twins' offense is not quite as formidable.

Day | Home SP | Visit. SP | Time | Where |
23-Apr | Miguel Gonzalez (1-1), 4.00 ERA, 6.02 FIP | R.A. Dickey (2-2), 4.30 ERA, 4.28 FIP | 7:05 pm ET | RSN, MASN2 |
It seemed like Dickey turned in a corner during his last start against the White Sox, but he departed due to a sore neck and back. Those body parts will be tested tonight in Baltimore as the O's try to figure out Dickey's knuckleball and prolong his AL struggles.
Day | Home SP | Visit. SP | Time | Where |
23-Apr | Jon Niese (2-1), 3.80 ERA, 4.41 FIP | Clayton Kershaw (2-2), 1.88 ERA, 3.12 FIP | 7:10 pm ET | KCAL, SNY, MLB.tv (free) |
For non-Los Angelians, the opportunity to watch Kershaw carve up a lineup does not come often, but this is MLB.tv's Free Game of the Day. Carpe diem! During ESPN's broadcast on Monday, Rick Sutcliffe said he felt Mets hurler Matt Harvey was now the most exciting pitcher in baseball, but for me, Kershaw puts up a better show than anyone.
Day | Home SP | Visit. SP | Time | Where |
23-Apr | Jason Vargas (0-2), 6.75 ERA, 4.24 FIP | Alexi Ogando (2-1), 3.32 ERA, 3.49 FIP | 10:05 pm ET | FOX Sports-West, FOX Sports-Southwest |
The Angels desperately need Vargas to step up and silence their division rival. The embarrassment of a pair of losses to the Twins on the road last week was countered by a home sweep of the defending AL champions, but a 6-3 seventh inning lead disappeared last night in Anaheim. The Rangers took their first series of the year against the Angels at home a couple weeks ago, and they can clinch another one with a victory tonight.
