Brett Anderson injury: Athletics LHP diagnosed with stress fracture in right foot

The Athletics starter may miss two months recovering from the latest injury.

Oakland Athletics starter Brett Anderson suffered a setback, as a CT scan revealed a navicular stress fracture of his right foot, the team announced on Friday. Anderson's latest injury requires additional rest and time on the disabled list; Oakland will re-evaluate Anderson in four weeks.

The Athletics placed the southpaw on the disabled list on May 1 with a sprained right ankle. Anderson had been able to throw and run recently, even making a rehab start, but could not completely put the injury behind him. Oakland beat writer Susan Slusser suggests that Anderson will miss two months, and possibly more, since he will need to build up his arm strength when he is healthy enough to pitch,

The ankle injury bothered Anderson to start the season, as the starter went 1-4 in his first six appearances this year. The lefty posted a 6.21 ERA over 29 innings, striking out 29 batters while issuing 15 walks.

Dan Straily has started in place of Anderson, but has battled issues with consistency. The the starter is 1-2 with a 7.27 ERA in his first five starts. Straily has shown swing-and-miss stuff, fanning 27 hitters in 26 innings, but has struggled with his command, walking 12 batters.

Slusser speculates that Straily’s inconsistency may cause the Athletics to call up 2011 first-round draft pick Sonny Gray. Gray has pitched well for Triple-A Sacramento this season, as he is 4-2 with a 2.47 ERA.
